Laparoscopic pyeloplasty is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to correct ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO). In this condition, the junction between the kidney pelvis and the ureter is narrowed or blocked. This obstruction can cause urine to back up into the kidney, leading to complications such as kidney stones, infections, and potential kidney damage.
At Aster MIMS Kottakkal, our expert surgeons perform laparoscopic pyeloplasty by making small incisions in the abdomen. Through these incisions, a laparoscope—a thin, flexible tube with a camera and light—is used to visualise the internal structures, while specialised instruments are utilised to perform the surgery. The obstructed part of the ureteropelvic junction is carefully removed, and the healthy portions of the ureter and renal pelvis are reattached to create a more comprehensive, unobstructed passage for urine flow.
This advanced technique offers numerous benefits over traditional open surgery, including smaller incisions, less post-operative pain, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery times. However, the suitability of this procedure depends on individual patient factors.
