Breast reconstruction surgery aims to restore or reconstruct the breast following its removal in cancer surgery. This procedure can be performed immediately after breast removal (Immediate reconstruction) or after completion of chemotherapy and radiation therapy associated with breast cancer treatment (Delayed reconstruction).
Various techniques are employed for breast reconstruction, including Breast Reduction and Breast Augmentation, depending on the amount of remaining breast tissue and available donor tissue from other areas of the body.
Donor tissue can be harvested from areas such as the abdomen, inner thigh, back, and buttocks, with resulting scars typically well-hidden post-surgery. In some cases, silicone or saline implants may be utilized to reshape the breast. Breast reconstruction significantly contributes to enhancing confidence and self-esteem while alleviating the emotional distress associated with breast loss.
