A pericardiectomy is a surgical procedure done on the sac surrounding the heart. The surgeon cuts the sac or a large part of the sac. This allows the free movement of the heart. A pericardiectomy is done in patients who have chronic constrictive pericarditis. Chronic constrictive pericarditis is when the pericardium becomes stiff and thick, leading to restrictive heart functions.
