A colonic decompression is performed in cases of an enlarged colon to provide relief. Decompression is done via immediate surgery or insertion of a catheter tube from the Anus until the colon. This process is helpful in the removal of any excess air trapped in the colon, which carries the risk of causing a colon rupture. A colonic decompression also prepares the colon for the endoscopic removal of any obstruction.
