Fevers can be described as a temporary increase in the body temperature of more than 98.6 degrees Celsius or 37 degrees Fahrenheit. Fevers are primarily a result of an immune response by the body against infections and diseases. Many fevers are generally harmless, but care should be taken when children have a fever lasting more than five days. A thermometer checks for fevers orally, in the ear, under the armpits, or rectally.
