Patients need to run diagnostic tests like cerebral angiography, CT scan, and MRI to confirm arterio-venous malformation in the brain. AVM surgery can be approached in different ways:
Open skull surgery - the neurosurgeon will open the skull, isolate the malformed vessel, clip it, and remove it from the surrounding tissues. Then suture the skull back.
Endovascular embolization - an endoscope is inserted into an artery in the wrist or leg up to the target aneurysm in the brain. Small coils or surgery glue are used to seal the malformed blood vessel and to redirect blood flow to the brain. This procedure is much less invasive than the typical open surgery.
