A craniotomy is a major surgery that involves treating a hole in the skull by removing a bone flap. This is done to visualize a part of the brain, Especially in cases of a brain tumor, or to take a part of the brain tissue for diagnostic tests or a brain aneurysm. The bone flap is sutured back again once the surgery is completed. MRI and CT scans are done to help with the surgery.
An endoscopic craniotomy is now preferred, which involves the insertion of an endoscope in the brain area via a small opening in the skull.
