Alzheimer's disease and other dementias are caused by degenerative neurologic changes resulting in the death of brain cells. Neurologists currently treat memory issues and other cognitive abnormalities with two types of medications. First, cholinesterase medication inhibitors increase cell-to-cell communication levels by conserving a chemical messenger that depletes the brain. Secondly, Memantine is a medication that reduces the progression of symptoms in patients with mild to moderate dementia by acting on a different brain cell communication network.
