Brain and Spinal Cord Infections
Brain infections can be brought on by bacteria, fungi, viruses, and, sporadically, protozoa or parasites. When patients have limited or no neurological abnormalities and a high risk from surgical intervention, nonsurgical treatment is given priority by expert neurologists. However, if any of the following conditions exist, surgery may be advised:
- Spinal instability
- Severe sepsis
- IV antibiotics fail to treat the infection.
