Acute sports injuries are handled by:
Protection: Apply support to the injured area to prevent further damage
Rest: No exercise, no stressful physical activity. Use a sling for an injured shoulder and crutches for an injured ankle.
Ice: Ice pack application is advised for acute injuries every 15-20 mins. Do not use direct ice to avoid ice burn.
Compression: Sports persons are advised to use elastic compression to help reduce swelling during the day
Elevation: Propping the injured body above the heart level can help reduce the onset of severe swelling.
