Malabsorption is a condition that can be caused by a variety of factors, including diseases of the small intestine, such as celiac disease, tropical sprue, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth and Crohn's disease, in which a person's body is unable to absorb enough nutrients from food. It can also be caused by issues in the pancreas, such as chronic pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis, or by certain medications. Malabsorption can also be caused by problems with the digestion of food, such as those caused by an enzyme deficiency. Diagnosing malabsorption involves a variety of tests, including blood tests, stool tests, and imaging tests.
