Lutetium Dotatate Therapy involves the use of a radioactive isotope, lutetium-177, coupled with a molecule called Dotatate. Dotatate specifically binds to somatostatin receptors found on neuroendocrine tumour (NET) cells.
NETs are a group of rare tumours that originate from cells of the neuroendocrine system. The neuroendocrine system is a complex network of cells that release hormones into the bloodstream to regulate various bodily functions. NETs can occur in various organs, but they are most commonly found in the gastrointestinal tract, pancreas, and lungs.

How does it work?
Before each treatment session, somatostatin receptor PET scans are conducted. These scans help identify all tumour sites in your body.
Lutetium Dotatate therapy is delivered through intravenous injection, allowing the radioactive compound to circulate in your bloodstream and reach tumour cells throughout the body.
The Dotatate molecule seeks out and binds to somatostatin receptors on the surface of NET cells.
Once bound to the tumour cells, lutetium-177 emits beta radiation, delivering targeted radiation to the cancer cells.
Depending on your condition and response, multiple sessions may be recommended.
Close monitoring of kidney function is a crucial aspect of the treatment plan. The medical team ensures regular assessments to detect any potential impact on kidneys, as radiation exposure can pose a risk over time.
