Aster Advanced Heart Valve Centre is a dedicated department operating under Aster Cardiac Sciences. It specializes in the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of the entire spectrum of heart valve disorders. Heart valves are essential structures in the heart that regulate blood flow, and problems with these valves can lead to various heart conditions, including heart failure.
This one-of-a-kind heart valve centre offers a comprehensive range of services to patients with heart valve disease. For a proper diagnosis and decision on the right course of treatment, the best imaging facility is crucial. We have the most advanced echocardiographic machine Vivid E95 with 3D transesophageal echo and intracardiac echo (ICE) which help proper evaluation of valve disease and fine tune procedures. These complex interventions are done in a “Hybrid Cath Lab” which can also act as a surgical theatre if the need arises.
The centre is well-equipped to provide a range of treatment options, such as medication, minimally invasive procedures like balloon valvuloplasty, and surgical procedures such as valve repair or replacement. This centre comprises of
- Heart Valve Clinic
- State-of-the-art imaging facilities
- Collaborative services such as ECMO, Heart Failure Clinic
- Non-cardiology support from Vascular and General Surgery, Neurology, Nephrology, Infection Control, Stroke and Elderly care, Psychiatric care
- Multidisciplinary Heart Team (Mitral, Aortic and Aortic Valve, Endocarditis)
Valvular Heart Diseases - An Overview
Valvular heart diseases are a common health problem in India, particularly among older adults. Many are unaware they have the condition or are told that they have symptoms during a routine check-up. According to a study published in the Indian Journal of Medical Research, the prevalence of rheumatic heart disease, which is a common cause of valvular heart disease, is estimated to be around 1.2 per 1,000 population in India.
In addition to rheumatic heart disease, other causes of valvular heart disease include degenerative valve disease, infective endocarditis, and congenital heart disease. Other risk factors for valvular heart disease such as hypertension, diabetes, and obesity are also becoming increasingly prevalent in India, which may contribute to the overall burden of valvular heart disease in the country.
Good thing is that there have been rapid advances in the treatment of heart valve disease in the past decade. Till recently treatment of valve disease beyond medical management was mostly surgical with its attendant morbidity. Now non-surgical interventional treatment modalities offer much less invasive options such as TAVI/TAVR, Mitra Clip, TMVR, etc.
