Prostate Cancer Care

The Centre for Prostate Cancer Care is one of the very few centres in the region that offers a complete spectrum of treatment options for people diagnosed with prostate cancer. Headed by qualified and experienced robotic surgeons, the centre is equipped with the latest technologies that ensure the utmost patient’s outcomes and faster recovery.

Prostate Cancer is one of the most common cancers in men. It is usually seen in the 65+ age group. Being diagnosed with prostate cancer may trigger a range of feelings, including fear, anxiety, depression, and disbelief. It can be detected early with PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen Blood Test).

PSA is commonly recommended for men over 50 years old. Old age, obesity, improper diet, and genetic alterations have been identified as some of the main contributing factors to an increased risk of prostate cancer.

At Aster Centre for Prostate Cancer Care, we adopt a patient-centric treatment approach. Our expert clinical team, which comes with a cumulative experience of 50+ years evaluates the patient’s history and present conditions thoroughly. After having detailed counselling with the patient and the family, we chalk out the customized treatment plan.

Services Offered

At Aster Medcity, we always strive to deliver complete, comprehensive and compassionate care at one place. All the treatment options are made available to them. The best possible treatment plan is derived keeping the patient's conditions in mind.

Laparoscopic Surgery

Surgery may be performed to remove the cancer along with the prostate gland. Since the prostate gland surrounds the urethra, a part of the urethra also may need to be removed. The urethra that is left behind is attached to the bladder. Tissues surrounding the prostate gland such as lymph nodes, may also be extracted and biopsy may be performed on them.

Minimal Access Robotic Surgery (MARS)

Robotic surgeries are highly specialised and advanced minimal access procedures that are performed by surgeons with the help of a surgery robot like the da Vinci at Aster Medcity. These procedures require a great amount of expertise and are performed by surgeons with special training in robotics.

Hormone Treatment

Hormonal Treatment involves Surgical Bilateral Orchiectomy (testes removal) or depot injections to suppress the formation of testosterone, which is formed in the testes. Normally, these procedures are accompanied by oral tablets as well. Hormonal treatment is a treatment option for locally advanced prostate cancers and advanced cancers with lymph nodes or distant metastases (bone, liver, lungs, or brain).

Radical Prostatectomy

It involves the removal of the prostate along with the seminal vesicles and lymph nodes, which can be achieved by: Robotic Surgery: Radical Prostatectomy is offered to patients with localized prostate cancer or in cases with locally advanced stages but without any Lymph node involvement.

Focal therapy

  • Using NanoKnife for organ-confined prostate cancer
  • Focal therapy for prostate cancer is a targeted treatment strategy designed to eliminate cancerous tissue within the prostate while preserving as much of the healthy prostate and its surrounding structures as possible. This approach aims to minimize side effects and maintain quality of life, especially regarding urinary and sexual function

Radiation Therapy

  • Radiation therapy uses high-energy rays or particles, to kill cancer cells. Depending on the stage of the prostate cancer and other factors, radiation therapy might be used:
  • As the first treatment for cancer that is still just in the prostate gland and is low grade. Cure rates for men with these types of cancers are about the same as those for men treated with radical prostatectomy.
  • As part of the first treatment (along with hormone therapy) for cancers that have grown outside the prostate gland and into nearby tissues.
  • If the cancer is not removed completely or comes back (recurs) in the area of the prostate after surgery.
  • If the cancer is advanced, to help keep the cancer under control for as long as possible and to help prevent or relieve symptoms.

Chemotherapy

  • Chemotherapy involves medications that help in stopping the growth of cancer cells. This is used in the advanced stage of the prostate cancer if the cancer has not spread to other parts of the body.

FAQs

What is the PSA?

This is a blood test, which tests for a prostate-specific antigen. This is a glycoprotein secreted by the prostate and is specific to the prostate. It is not specific to prostate cancer since it can be increased in prostate infections, following prostate manipulation and huge enlargement of the benign prostate. If PSA is raised or there is any abnormality on finger examination, we advise a prostatic biopsy.

What happens once the diagnosis of prostate cancer is made?

The patient will be asked to get a few more tests like MRI of pelvis, Bone scans or PMSA PET scans depending on the initial findings to state the disease.

What is a prostatic biopsy?

It is a small procedure, where we take a few bits of prostatic tissue directly with finger guidance or with trans-rectal ultrasound. The bits are sent for histological examination.
