Overview

MRCOG training (UK) programme at Aster Medcity is a new partnership between the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, UK and Aster Medcity. This is equivalent to the Basic ( ST1-2) and Intermediate training (ST 3-5) in UK. The trainees entering the programme will be using the RCOG training curricula and over a period of three years, they will be able to successfully complete the MRCOG exams and become a member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. This theme supports doctors in training to learn by recognising that their potential to develop the appropriate professional values, knowledge, skills and behaviours is influenced by the learning environment and culture in which they are educated and trained. Training and education should take place in an environment where patients are safe, the care and experience of patients is good, and education and training are valued. This training programme at Aster Medcity aims to ensure that learners receive appropriate educational and pastoral support to be able to demonstrate what is expected of them and achieve the learning outcomes required by their curriculum.

Once accepted into the appropriate level specialty training in O&G, each trainee will be provided with an e Portfolio, which includes an eLogbook, to use to record attainment of competencies. The trainee needs to attain a defined level of competencies to progress from basic to intermediate level before completing the MRCOG Part 3 exam. In addition to our own faculty at Aster, there will be UK faculty to train the trainees through face to face and virtual meetings.

Eligibility Criteria & Selection Process

1. Basic Training (ST1-2) – Post MBBS doctors.

Trainees will enter Training at ST1. Trainees will follow the RCOG Core O&G curriculum and prepare for Part 1. A satisfactory Annual Review of Competency Progression (ARCP) outcome will be required at the end of each year of training. The first critical progression point will be from ST2 to ST3, as the trainee will normally be 'stepping up' to become the obstetrics and gynaecology registrar. It is essential that educational and clinical supervisors are confident that the trainee has the ability to perform in this role. Trainees will be required to complete Part 1 MRCOG by the end of year 2 of training (ST2).

2. Intermediate Training (ST3-5) –

a. Post MBBS doctors with 2 years’ experience in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, OR
b. Doctors holding a DGO/MS degree in Obstetrics & Gynaecology
c. Candidates should have passed the Part I MRCOG exam for direct entry into the ST3 training.

Trainees will enter Intermediate Training at ST3 level, following an assessment of basic training competencies and attainment of MRCOG Part 1. Trainees will follow the Core curriculum, and prepare for MRCOG Part 2 and Part 3. The end of ST5 is a critical progression point when the trainee hold full MRCOG, as well as be signed off for the relevant generic and specialty outcomes and practical procedures.  A satisfactory Annual Review of Competency Progression (ARCP) outcome will be required for progression between each training year.

There will be 5 training posts per year and selection will be based on the candidate’s performance at the interview. The purpose of this is to ensure that the process for entry into the training programme is fair and transparent. It consists of marks for aptitude for training, communication skills, ethical skills, clinical skills, extracurricular activities, paper presentations, publications and any other degrees obtained. Interview panel will consist of experts from Aster Medcity and RCOG, UK.
