Breast reconstruction surgery is to recreate or reform the breast after the removal of the breast in cancer surgery. Breast reconstruction can be done immediately after the removal of the breast (Immediate reconstruction) or after the completion of chemoradiation associated with cancer of the breast (Delayed reconstruction).
There are multiple techniques of breast reconstruction, a few being Breast Reduction and Breast Augmentation, and it depends upon the residual breast tissue as well as the available tissue in the donor areas (areas from which tissue needs to be transferred to the breast area).
The donor areas can be from the abdomen, inner thigh, back, and even from the buttocks. All the donor areas after surgery have hidden well-accepted scars.
In some cases, silicone or salvific implants are used to reshape the breast. Breast reconstruction helps immensely to boost confidence and self-esteem and smoothens the pain of losing breasts.
