Kochi: Aster Medcity has launched a Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) Support Group for Parkinson’s patients. DBS is a neurosurgical procedure involving placement of neurostimulator for the treatment of movement disorders, including Parkinson’s disease.
The DBS Support Group, inaugurated by Nanda Kumar, the first patient to undergo DBS procedure at Aster Medcity five years ago, will facilitate counselling to patients and relatives, according to the hospital. Moreover, the group will address all the doubts and apprehensions related to DBS therapy. It will guide the patients on things that should be avoided and followed after the therapy. The DBS group will also act as a mediator between the patient and technical team for communication.
Speaking on the occasion, 58-year-old Hariharan, who underwent DBS procedure a month ago, said, “The disease had left me almost bedridden and I was taken to the doctor in a wheel chair. But today I came to attend the function without any support.”
Hibi Eden MP, V. D. Satheesan MLA and Actor Vinay Fort in their video messages appreciated the hospital for launching the programme to support the patients and their relatives. Patients their shared their experiences at the function. Ambili Vijayaraghavan, Chief Operating Officer, Aster Medcity; Dr. T. R. John, Chief of Medical Services; Dr. Dilip Panikar, Senior Consultant Neurosurgery, Dr. Boby Varkey Maramattom, Lead Consultant Neurologist, patients, who had undergone DBS therapy, and their relatives were present at the function.
