What is Root Canal Treatment?

by Dr. Vartika Kumari

Introduction:

When it comes to dental health, many people get nervous at the thought of a root canal. But here’s the thing—it’s not as scary as it sounds! Root canal treatment is actually a common procedure that helps save your natural teeth and relieve pain. Whether you’ve heard about it from a friend or dentist, understanding what a root canal involves can take a lot of the mystery (and fear) out of the process. In this post, we’ll walk you through what a root canal is, why you might need one, and what you can expect during and after the treatment.

What is a Root Canal?

A root canal is a dental procedure that’s used to treat infection or damage inside the tooth. Inside each tooth, there’s a soft tissue called the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. When this pulp becomes infected or injured—often from a deep cavity, crack, or trauma—it can cause severe pain and even lead to the loss of the tooth if left untreated. During a root canal, the dentist carefully removes the infected pulp, cleans the inside of the tooth, and then fills it to prevent further damage. This procedure helps save the tooth, so you can keep it for years to come! If you have been told you need one, you’re probably wondering what exactly happens during the process and why it’s necessary.

Why Would You Need One?

There are a few common reasons why a root canal might be necessary. Teeth are made up of several layers, with the outer layer being enamel and the inner part containing a soft tissue called pulp . Pulp holds nerves, blood vessels and connective tissues The tooth becomes infected, often due to a deep cavity that reaches the pulp. Other causes could include cracks or chips in the tooth, or even an injury that affects the pulp. When the pulp gets infected, it can cause pain, swelling, or even an abscess (a pus-filled pocket) around the root of the tooth. If left untreated , the infection can spread, leading to abscesses or even tooth loss. So, while the idea of a root canal might sound intimidating, it’s actually a way to save your tooth and avoid more serious issues.

What to Expect During a Root Canal?

The thought of a root canal might bring up images of pain, but the procedure itself is actually pretty straightforward and, thanks to modern dentistry, not as uncomfortable as you might think. Here’s what happens: First your dentist will take x rays to determine the extent of damage. If pulp is infected, they will recommend a root canal treatment.

 Steps for root canal treatment

1. Numbing:

The first step is to make sure you’re comfortable. Your dentist will numb the area around the tooth with a local anesthetic, ensuring you feel no pain during the procedure.

2. Cleaning :

Once the area is numb, the dentist makes a small opening in the crown (top) of the tooth to access the pulp. They’ll carefully remove the infected or damaged pulp, clean out the root canals, and then shape the space to prepare for filling.

3.Filling and Sealing:

After cleaning , it’s filled with a special material to seal it and prevent any further infection. Sometimes, a temporary filling is placed to give the area time to heal until the permanent one can be added.

4. Restoration:

After the root canal is complete, the tooth will be sealed with a permanent filling followed by a crown. Your tooth needs a crown to restore its strength, function and appearance.
