Dengue Fever: What You Need to Know (and How to Avoid It!)

by Dr. Suchismitha Rajamanya

This video is about Dengue Fever and how to tackle it. In the video, Dr. Suchismitha Rajamanya, HOD and Lead Consultant - Internal Medicine, from Aster Whitefield Hospital discusses Dengue Fever, its treatment, and preventative measures.

Treatment options

There is no specific treatment for Dengue Fever and there are no magic drugs to prevent it. The mainstay of Dengue treatment is the administration of fluids. Patients who are able to take fluids orally and are not vomiting or severely tired can be treated on an OPD basis. However, patients with low blood pressure, platelet counts less than 50,000, or signs of severe dehydration need hospitalization and aggressive IV fluids.

There is currently no vaccine for Dengue Fever because the virus has four subtypes, and antibodies produced against one subtype won't protect against the others. So, the only way to prevent Dengue Fever is to protect yourself from mosquito bites.

Do not ignore symptoms of fever, body pains, and headache, especially if they last more than 48 hours. It is recommended to seek medical help and reach out to the Department of Internal Medicine at Aster Whitefield Hospital.
