Dr. Dheeraj Shyam V. N., Consultant in Interventional Radiology at Aster Whitefield Hospital talks about the role of interventional radiology in oncology, a field of medicine that uses image-guided minimally invasive procedures to diagnose and treat cancer.
The two main areas where interventional radiology plays a critical role in oncology are diagnosis and treatment. In terms of diagnosis, interventional radiologists use ultrasound and CT-guided procedures to perform biopsies from various locations in the body. These minimally invasive procedures use needles thinner than hair to collect tissue samples, leaving no scars.
Trans Arterial Chemo Embolization
For treatment, interventional radiologists perform a variety of procedures including microwave ablation and radiofrequency ablation to destroy tumors in the liver, kidney, and thyroid. They can also deliver targeted chemotherapy directly to tumors in the liver through a procedure called Trans Arterial Chemo Embolization (TACE) to avoid systemic side effects of chemotherapy. Additionally, they perform radio embolization of advanced liver tumors by injecting radioactive particles directly into the tumor. At Aster Whitefield Hospital's Interventional Radiology Department, we have expert doctors and the latest technology and infrastructure to support these high-end procedures.
