by Dr. Kumardev Arvind Rajamanya

Dr. Kumardev Aravind Rajamanya, HOD and Lead Consultant in the Department of Orthopedics at Aster Whitefield Hospital explains about osteoarthritis of the knee, its causes, symptoms, and treatment options. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that occurs when the cartilage that cushions the ends of your bones wears down over time. This can lead to pain, stiffness, and swelling in the joints. The knee is a common site for osteoarthritis.

Symptoms of Osteoarthritis

There are four stages of osteoarthritis, based on the severity of the condition. These stages are determined by a physical examination and X-rays. The symptoms of osteoarthritis can include pain, stiffness, swelling, and decreased range of motion in the knee joint. The pain may worsen with activity and improve with rest.

Treatment Options

There are a number of treatment options available for osteoarthritis, including medications, injections, physical therapy, braces, lifestyle changes, and surgery. The best treatment option for you will depend on the severity of your condition and your overall health.  Medications used to treat osteoarthritis include pain relievers, such as acetaminophen and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and corticosteroids. Injections of corticosteroids or hyaluronic acid can also be used to relieve pain and inflammation.

Physical therapy can help to improve strength, flexibility, and range of motion in the knee joint. Braces can provide support and stability to the knee. Lifestyle changes, such as losing weight and exercising regularly, can also help to manage osteoarthritis. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to treat osteoarthritis. Surgical options include arthroscopy, osteotomy, and knee replacement.

Osteoarthritis is a common condition that can cause significant pain and disability. However, with early diagnosis and treatment, it is possible to manage the condition and maintain a good quality of life. To know more, visit the Department of Orthopedics at Aster Whitefield Hospital.
