This video talks about Hyperglycemic Complications, a complication of diabetes. In the video, Dr. Venkatesha Gupta K.V., Consultant - Critical Care Medicine from Aster Whitefield Hospital discusses two major complications, Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) and Hyperglycemic Hyperosmolar State (HHS).
Causes and effects
Hyperglycemic complications happen when a diabetic patient's blood sugar goes up significantly. This can be caused by stress or infection. The two major complications, DKA and HHS, can cause dehydration, abnormal breathing, and patients can become unresponsive. In severe cases, blood sugar levels can go above 300 mg/dL.
Treatment options
Patients with these complications need to be hospitalized and may need ICU care. The treatment will include fluids, electrolytes, and insulin administered in a controlled way. Recovery time is generally 12-24 hours for DKA and 2-3 days for HHS, but with proper treatment the prognosis is good.
