This video is about blood problems in children, focusing on a condition called Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP). ITP is a disorder that causes a low platelet count in children. Dr. Raghuram C P, Consultant - Pediatric, Hematology, Oncology & BMT at Aster Women & Children Hospital, discusses the causes, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of ITP.
Causes and Diagnosis of ITP
The most common cause of ITP is an infection. Other possible causes include autoimmune diseases, medications, and pregnancy. Symptoms of ITP can include easy bruising, nosebleeds, and bleeding gums. Diagnosis of ITP is made through a blood test to check the platelet count.
Treatment Options
Treatment for ITP depends on the severity of the condition. Mild cases may not require treatment. Moderate cases may be treated with medications such as steroids or intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG). Severe cases may require a platelet transfusion or splenectomy. Dr. Raghuram also discusses the prognosis for ITP. Most children with ITP recover completely. However, a small percentage of children may develop chronic ITP, which requires long-term treatment.
