Carotid stenting / intracranial stenting
Patients sometimes present with multiple episodes of minor or major strokes due to atherosclerotic narrowing of the blood vessels in neck which supplies brain or the blood vessels present within the brain. Due to narrowing of the blood vessels they cause small blood clots which causes stroke and at the same time reduces blood supply to brain. These types of narrowing of blood vessels can be treated by carotid angioplasty and stenting. Here, stent is placed across the narrowed part of blood vessels so that blood flow to brain is increased and small blood clots are not formed. If similar type of narrowing is present in brain blood vessels then intracranial stenting can be done. These are relatively safe procedure with good results.
