by Dr. Shireen Furtado

Did you know that over 30% of dermatology skin consultations in India happen due to diseases caused by seasonal changes? We all know and have experience the drastic climate change in India, right from having a sunburn due to intense heat of Rajasthan or fungal infection due to non-stop rain of Mumbai or chapped and dry lips and face in breezy winter of the North. All these transitions impact skin health significantly, leading to numerous dermatological disorders. As the temperature changes, the skin reacts differently to those conditions, and therefore it is essential to modify the skincare routine according to it.

In this blog, we will be talking about common skin ailments, their symptoms and signs, prevention, and treatment occurring due to the seasonal change in India.

How Does Seasonal Change Affect the Skin?

The skin is the largest organ in the body and acts as an environmental barrier. Temperature, humidity, and levels of pollution change with the seasons and influence skin hydration, secretion of oil, and sensitivity, leading to a number of skin problems. Here’s how the skin of those affected due to the change in season:

  • Summer: Excess sweating from warm and humid conditions leads to acne, sunburn, and fungal infections.
  • Monsoon: Fungal infections, eczema eruptions, and oiliness may be caused by excess humidity.
  • Winter: Cold and dry air sucks moisture from the skin, resulting in dryness, itchiness, and cracking.
  • Spring & Autumn: Transition periods trigger allergies, which cause rashes and skin irritation.

Being aware of these changes can help prevent and cure seasonal skin disorders effectively.

Common Skin Conditions in India Due to Seasonal Changes

1. Heat Rash (Prickly Heat) – Summer
Heat rash or prickly heat occurs when sweat glands become clogged due to excessive sweating, leading to inflammation and irritation. This is most common during hot and humid weather when sweat gets trapped under the skin because of clothing or prolonged exposure to heat.

Symptoms:

  • Red, itchy bumps on the neck, chest, back, and armpits
  • Burning or prickling sensation on the skin

Prevention & Treatment:

  • Wear loose, light and breathable clothing
  • Keep the skin dry and cool
  • Use calamine lotion or cooling powders

2. Sunburn and Tanning – Summer
Constant exposure to the sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation damages the skin and causes sunburn, redness, and peeling. Also, frequent repeated exposure without cover leads to tanning, the skin's automatic response to damage from UV rays. Sunburn is most likely when sunscreen is not applied often or when people are out when the sun is strongest.

Symptoms:

  • Redness, peeling, and blistering of the skin
  • Darkening of sun-exposed areas

Prevention & Treatment:

  • Use sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) every day
  • Avoid exposure to sunlight between 10 AM and 4 PM
  • Use aloe vera gel to soothe the skin

3. Fungal Infections – Monsoon
Fungal infections adore warm and humid conditions, and the monsoon is just that kind of climate for them to thrive. High humidity, excessive sweating, and poor hygiene make the situation ripe for growth of fungi there, particularly in folds of skin like armpits, groin, and toes.

Symptoms:

  • Red, itchy patches on the skin
  • White, flaky patches or ring-shaped rashes

Prevention & Treatment:

  • Keep skin dry and wear dry-fit fabrics
  • Use antifungal powders and creams
  • Avoid sharing personal items like towels and shoes

4. Eczema Flare-Ups – Monsoon & Winter
Eczema is an episodic skin disease that is aggravated by environmental factors like allergens, pollution, and unexpected weather changes. Monsoons yield high humidity that leads to flare-ups, while winter triggers very dry conditions, leading to inflamed, itchy, and cracked skin.

Symptoms:

  • Red, inflamed, itchy skin
  • Cracking and peeling in severe cases

Prevention & Treatment:

  • Use fragrance-free creams regularly to moisturize
  • Stop the use of harsh soaps and long hot baths
  • Use prescribed steroid creams, if necessary

5. Chapped Lips and Dry Skin – Winter
Cold winds and low humidity dry out the skin's natural moisture, leading to dryness, chapping, flaking, and chapped lips. Exposure to hot water also enhances dryness, leaving the skin susceptible to cracks and irritation.

Symptoms:

  • Dry, cracked, flaky skin on the hands, feet, and face
  • Bleeding, sore lips

Prevention & Treatment:

  • Use thick lip balms and moisturizers with SPF
  • Prevent lip licking, which irritates dryness
  • Drink a lot of water and use an indoor humidifier

6. Dandruff – Winter & Monsoon
Dandruff is an easy scalp disease that happens due to dryness of the scalp during winter or excessive oil secretions during monsoon, and thus fungal activity. This imbalance causes flaky skin, irritation and itchiness.

Symptoms:

  • White flakes on the scalp and shoulders
  • Irritated and itchy scalp

Prevention & Treatment:

  • Apply an anti-dandruff shampoo that contains ketoconazole or zinc pyrithione
  • Do not excessively use hair styling products
  • Keep the scalp clean and moisturize

7. Allergic Skin Reactions – Spring & Autumn
Seasonal changes can trigger allergic skin reactions due to pollen, dust, and sudden temperature changes. These allergens can cause rashes, itching, and swelling, typically in people with sensitive skin or a past history of allergies.

Symptoms:

  • Red and itchy rashes or hives
  • Swelling and irritation

Prevention & Treatment:

  • Avoid known allergens and use antihistamines if needed
  • Wear protective equipment while engaging in outdoor activities
  • Use gentle, hypoallergenic skin care products

8. Acne Breakouts – Summer & Monsoon
Acne worsens during summer and monsoon due to excessive sweating, oil secretion, and bacterial proliferation. The humidity and clogged pores lead to more breakouts on the face, back, and chest.
Symptoms:

  • Pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads
  • Inflammation and pus-filled spots

Prevention & Treatment:

  • Clean face twice daily with a mild cleanser
  • Use non-comedogenic skin care products
  • Use topical therapy with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide
