The Importance of Accurate Diagnosis: A Glimpse into Dr. Ramesh Super Speciality Lab’s Haematology Services

by Dr. C. Padmavathi Devi

As a professor and head of the Department of Pathology for nearly 15 years, followed by my role as Additional Director and Principal for two years, I had the opportunity to visit numerous healthcare institutions, both in official capacities for inspections and conferences. Over the years, I’ve observed various levels of diagnostic practices, and one critical realization stood out: accurate and timely diagnosis, especially in haematology, is paramount to patient care

In my professional journey, I’ve seen firsthand the critical importance of getting a correct diagnosis at the earliest opportunity to ensure the right treatment is initiated. In the field of haematology, this becomes even more vital because blood tests often serve as the first line of diagnostic investigation. These tests can identify a wide range of conditions, from anemia and infections to blood cancers. However, to my surprise, some laboratories do not fulfill all the necessary criteria for accurate and reliable results

Every blood test tells a story, and the accuracy of this story directly impacts treatment decisions and outcomes for patients. For this reason, I have a deep appreciation for Dr. Ramesh Super Speciality Hospital’s Haematology Lab. It serves as an excellent example of how a laboratory can prioritize quality at every step—from sample collection, through analysis, to the final reporting of results. In my experience, a strong commitment to quality is the cornerstone of any healthcare facility, and Dr. Ramesh’s lab truly embodies this principle

Dr. Ramesh Super Speciality Lab: A Commitment to Quality

The Haematology Lab at Dr. Ramesh Super Speciality Hospital follows stringent procedures and protocols to ensure that each test is performed with the highest level of accuracy. They adhere to best practices in every step of the process

1. Sample Collection

Proper sample collection is the first step in obtaining accurate results. At Dr. Ramesh’s lab, the technicians are well-trained to handle blood samples with care, ensuring that the samples are collected under hygienic conditions and are not contaminated. This attention to detail ensures that the results are trustworthy

2. Advanced Analysis

The laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment that allows for thorough and precise analysis of blood samples. Cutting-edge technology is used to detect a range of blood disorders with a high degree of accuracy. The lab employs automated systems as well as expert technicians to review the findings

3. Internal Quality Control at Dr. Ramesh Super Speciality Lab

At Dr. Ramesh Super Speciality Lab, we take great pride in our commitment to maintaining the highest standards of accuracy and reliability in every test we perform. Our internal quality control measures ensure that the diagnostic results we provide are of the utmost quality, reflecting our dedication to patient care

4. Internal Quality Control Process

A. To ensure precision, we use standard solutions with known values, which include known normal, high, and low values. These are run three times a day, every day, to verify the accuracy of our instruments. If any deviations are detected from the known values, corrective actions are immediately implemented, and preventive measures are taken to ensure that the issue does not recur

B. Once a kit is completed, we compare the values from the previous kit with those from the new kit using all three standard values: normal, high, and low. Any deviations found are managed through corrective actions, and steps are taken to prevent them in the future

C. For tests like ESR (Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate), where standard solutions are not available, we use a unique approach. Two technicians independently perform the test using the same sample, and the results are compared for consistency

5. Integrity and Instrument Comparison

To further ensure the accuracy of our results, we conduct instrument comparison tests. The same sample of blood is tested on the instrument one day before and one day after, and the results are compared. Additionally, the same sample is run through two different instruments, and the results are also compared to ensure consistency. Any deviations observed are addressed with corrective actions and preventive measures

6. External Quality Control

Dr. Ramesh Super Speciality Lab has partnered with renowned institutions like BIORAD, CMC, and RML Labs for external quality control. We undergo External Quality Assurance (EQA) testing every month, where we receive samples with unknown values. The results of these tests are sent back to the laboratories. I am proud to say that we consistently pass these external quality tests without any deviations, ensuring that we maintain the highest standards of quality

7. Continuous Quality Improvement

We are committed to ongoing quality improvement. Every month, we compile LJ charts (Levey-Jennings charts) and graphs with CV percentages, tracking various quality metrics such as repeat tests, rejections, critical values, patient feedback, and TAT (Turnaround Time) deviations. This data is analyzed thoroughly, and based on the findings, we implement corrective and preventive actions to continuously enhance the quality of our diagnostic processes

8. Turnaround Time (TAT) in Laboratory Settings Refers to the Duration from When a Specimen is Received in the Laboratory to When the Final Report is Issued

Efficient TAT is essential for timely diagnosis and treatment decisions. The Turnaround Time (TAT) for a CBC (Complete Blood Count) test is within 3 hours, Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology [FNAC] is twelve hours Fluid Cytology is twelve hours and Cervical PAP Smears is one day

9. Significance of TAT in Reports

A. Timely Diagnosis: Ensures that clinicians receive results promptly, facilitating swift decision-making

B. Patient Care: Delays in reporting can hinder timely diagnosis and treatment, potentially affecting patient outcomes

C. Quality Assurance: Monitoring TATs helps laboratories assess and improve their performance

D. In summary, maintaining efficient TATs for haematology, cytology, and histopathology is vital for ensuring timely and effective patient care

10. Reporting with Clarity

Once the analysis is complete, the results are meticulously documented and communicated. Reports are not only comprehensive but also easy to understand for both physicians and patients. Clear, actionable insights are essential to making timely and informed medical decisions

11. Accreditation: A Mark of Excellence

One of the key differentiators for Dr. Ramesh Super Speciality Hospital’s Haematology Lab is its recognition through accreditations from prestigious institutions. The lab is accredited by both the NABL (National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories) and JCI (Joint Commission International), which sets it apart in terms of international standards of excellence

NABL

This is a recognition provided by the government of India to healthcare institutions that meet rigorous quality standards. It is an essential requirement for hospitals across India to ensure they deliver accurate diagnostic services

JCI

The Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation is a globally recognized symbol of healthcare excellence. JCI is an authority in healthcare accreditation and ensures that hospitals and healthcare providers meet the highest international standards of care and safety. Dr. Ramesh Super Speciality Hospital’s lab being accredited by JCI reflects its commitment to providing world-class services

12. The Importance of Global Standards in Haematology

Accreditation from both NABL and JCI not only assures the hospital and lab meet national and international standards but also highlights their dedication to continuous improvement. In a field as sensitive and vital as haematology, these accreditations help ensure that the diagnostic processes are reliable, transparent, and performed with precision. Patients and healthcare providers can trust that the results coming from Dr. Ramesh’s lab are of the highest quality

Conclusion

The journey from blood collection to diagnostic reporting is complex, and it requires unwavering attention to detail and adherence to best practices. Dr. Ramesh Super Speciality Hospital’s Haematology Lab has earned its reputation as a leader in diagnostic excellence, thanks to its dedication to maintaining high standards and investing in quality control at every stage of the process. The lab’s adherence to NABL and JCI accreditation ensures that patients receive precise, timely, and reliable blood test results

As healthcare continues to evolve, I believe that more institutions should follow the example set by Dr. Ramesh Super Speciality Hospital, where patient care and diagnostic accuracy go hand in hand. It’s not just about running tests—it’s about providing accurate stories that can shape the future of treatment
