Dr. Ajith Kumar A.K., Lead Consultant - Critical Care Medicine at Aster Whitefield Hospital talks about how to manage respiratory infections that arise due to changes in weather. Respiratory infections are common in Bangalore due to weather changes. These infections can be caused by viruses, bacteria, fungus, or parasites. During this season, viral respiratory infections, especially influenza A, B, H1N1 and H3N2 are common.
Treatment Options
Dr. Ajith also details different stages of treatment for respiratory infections. Patients with low oxygen levels may require high-flow oxygen with a mask. If the infection is severe and high-flow nasal oxygen is not sufficient, a ventilator may be required. In the most severe cases, Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) may be necessary. ECMO is a process where blood is taken from the patient, oxygenated by a machine outside the body, and returned to the patient.
Aster Whitefield Hospital is equipped to manage all types of respiratory emergencies and infections.
