A New Hope for Patients with Peritoneal Surface Malignancy (PSM)

by Prof. Dr. Somashekhar S P

Dr. Somashekhar S.P., who is one among the most accomplished super speciality consultants in Surgical Oncology, Robotic Surgery, HIPEC, PIPAC in India talks about a new treatment for Peritoneal Surface Malignancy (PSM), a type of advanced stage cancer that can occur in the appendix, stomach, colon, and ovaries. The traditional treatment, IV chemo, is not effective for PSM because the chemo drugs cannot reach the abdomen.

What is HIPEC?

HIPEC (Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemo) is a new treatment that offers hope for patients with PSM.  During HIPEC surgery, a heated chemo solution is circulated in the abdomen for 90 minutes. HIPEC can be curative for some patients with ovarian cancer and appendix cancer, and palliative (to improve quality of life) for patients with selected colorectal and gastric cancers.

If you are interested in knowing more about HIPEC, you can reach out to Aster Whitefield Hospital or ask your doctor if you are a candidate for this treatment.
