Stages of Chronic Kidney Disease Explained

by Dr. Topoti Mukherjee

According to the video, it is about the stages of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). Dr. Topoti Mukherjee, Lead Consultant - Nephrology and Kidney Transplantation at Aster Whitefield Hospital explains that CKD goes through five stages. She also mentions that unfortunately, in the first few stages, the patients are not detected because CKD is largely asymptomatic. It is only in the final stage, that is CKD stage five, that one requires dialysis or transplant. These therapies will be guided by your nephrologist as to what is optimum for you and what is best for you.

Role of diet in treating Chronic Kidney Disease

In the earlier stages, that is CKD stage one, two, and three, if at all they are detected, a lot of emphasis is laid on the control of blood pressure, control of diabetes, control of certain factors in the diet. A certain diet is assigned to the patients, and they are insisted upon avoiding certain medications. Regular follow-up is also insisted upon because it has been shown that even regular checkups with the nephrologists slows the progression of CKD, which is a huge economic, physiological, and physical psychosocial advantage to the patients.
