Common Newborn Issues (Part 2)

by Dr. Lathiesh Kumar

Dr. Lathiesh Kumar, Lead Neonatology, Consultant – Paediatrics and Neonatology, Aster Women & Children Hospital, discusses common newborn issues and how to care for a newborn baby.

Jaundice

Jaundice is a yellowing of the skin and eyes caused by a buildup of bilirubin in the blood. The baby's liver may not be mature enough to process bilirubin efficiently. Breastfeeding difficulties can also contribute to jaundice. Phototherapy (exposure to special lights) and frequent breastfeeding can help reduce bilirubin levels.

Baby Care Tips

  • Sponge bath: It is recommended to give sponge baths to newborns until the umbilical cord falls off.
  • Cord care: Keep the umbilical cord clean and dry.
  • Nail care: Keep the baby's nails trimmed to prevent scratches.
  • Burping: Burp the baby frequently during and after feedings to release air.

Newborn Health Concerns

  • Weight loss: Newborns may lose some weight in the first few days of life, but excessive weight loss should be monitored.
  • Temperature regulation: Newborns are sensitive to temperature changes and need to be dressed appropriately.

Seek medical attention if the baby's jaundice worsens or persists or If the baby has a fever, difficulty breathing, or refuses to feed or if the baby is excessively lethargic or irritable. For more information, consult the Department of Neonatology at Aster Women & Children Hospital.
