Dr. Lathiesh Kumar, Lead Neonatology, Consultant – Pediatrics and Neonatology at Aster Women & Children Hospital, discusses common newborn issues and how to manage them.
What are some common newborn issues?
Several common newborn issues include jaundice, breastfeeding difficulties, and baby blues. Jaundice is a yellowing of the skin and eyes caused by a buildup of bilirubin in the blood. Breastfeeding difficulties can include latching problems, low milk supply, and sore nipples. Baby blues is a mild form of postpartum depression that affects many new mothers.
How are these issues treated?
Jaundice is often treated with phototherapy, which exposes the baby to special lights that help break down bilirubin. Breastfeeding difficulties can be helped by a lactation consultant, who can teach new mothers how to properly latch and breastfeed their babies. Baby blues usually goes away on its own within a few weeks, but if it doesn't, it's important to seek professional help.
What are some other things to keep in mind about newborn care?
In addition to the issues discussed in this video, there are a number of other things to keep in mind about newborn care. These include making sure the baby is getting enough sleep, eating properly, and getting regular checkups. It is also important to create a safe sleeping environment for the baby and to avoid smoking around them.
