Alzheimer’s: A Growing Concern—Know the Signs Early Before It Leads to Severe Memory Loss and Dependency

by Dr. Sreekanta Swamy

What is Alzheimer's?

Every year 21st October is observed as World Alzheimer's Day. This World Alzheimer’s Day, Aster RV Hospital urges everyone to recognise the signs early and seek help.

Alzheimer’s disease is a condition that gradually damages the brain, causing memory loss and difficulty with thinking and daily tasks. It’s the most common cause of dementia, which is a general term used to describe problems with memory, reasoning, and daily functioning.

Alzheimer’s disease  accounts for 70-75% of all dementia cases. Worldwide, over 57.4 million people are living with Alzheimer’s. In India alone, nearly 3.84 million people were affected by dementia in 2019, and by 2050, the country is expected to have the second-largest number of dementia cases, after China.

Alzheimer’s disease primarily affects individuals over 60, with women more susceptible than men. Unfortunately, it is often mistaken for normal ageing, leading to delays in diagnosis. The disease is linked to the buildup of abnormal proteins like beta-amyloid and tau, which disrupt brain function. While no cure exists, treatments can slow the progression of memory loss and manage symptoms.

What are the risk factors?

Risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease include age, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, smoking, excessive alcohol use, and social isolation. Early management of these factors can reduce the risk of dementia later in life.

Doctors diagnose Alzheimer’s disease through blood tests, brain scans, and cerebrospinal fluid analysis. While medications can slow cognitive decline, treatment is tailored to each patient's symptoms.

At Aster RV Hospital, we urge everyone to stay informed, recognise early signs of Alzheimer’s, and address potential risk factors. Early diagnosis and support can greatly improve the quality of life for those affected. Let’s raise awareness and support patients and their caregivers.
