Guided by the expertise of the medical team, she chose to undergo a total laparoscopic hysterectomy at Aster RV Hospital, Bengaluru. In a groundbreaking procedure, doctors there set a South India record by removing a massive 4.005 kg fibroid from the uterus using laparoscopic surgery. Dr. Sunil Eshwar, Lead Consultant Laparoscopic Surgeon, and his team successfully operated on 42-year-old Vijetha (name changed), extracting a fibroid uterus weighing an astounding 4 kg.
Despite her lack of symptoms and any history of medical issues or surgeries, the discovery of such a large fibroid was a shock. According to the press release, the decision came down to choosing between a total laparoscopic hysterectomy or an abdominal hysterectomy. Based on the medical team’s guidance, Vijetha bravely opted for the laparoscopic approach.
“I came to the hospital with my scan reports,” shared Vijetha. “I had no complaints about menstrual pain or irregular periods, but during a routine scan, Dr. Vijayalakshmi V., Radiologist, detected fibroids with a uterus size equivalent to a 32-34 week pregnancy. She referred me to Dr. Sunil Eshwar, who carefully explained both surgical options, and I chose the laparoscopic procedure.”
Dr. Sunil Eshwar explained, “The challenge with a laparoscopic approach in this case was the limited space to maneuver instruments due to the size of the fibroid and uterus occupying the abdomen. Identifying and managing the blood vessels supplying the uterus required precision. Typically, fibroids appear in about 20-30% of women in the reproductive age range, but encountering such a large fibroid is extremely rare. While a conventional removal would require an 8 cm incision, the laparoscopic method only required a 3 cm incision.”
