Neurorehabilitation Management of Stroke, Brain Injury, and Neuromuscular Disorders
Neurorehabilitation encompasses the management of several conditions, including stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, and neuromuscular disorders such as critical care neuropathy or demyelinating neuropathy.
Neurorehabilitation deals with the following issues.
- Recovery from unconscious status
- After recovery from unconsciousness, evaluation of cognitive, swallowing, and physical function.
- Make plans to improve cognitive functions like orientation, memory, and recall.
- Make plans to improve swallowing and educate oral muscle strengthening.
- Make plans to improve sitting and standing balance.
- Make plans for walking independent or walking with assisted devices like cane.

The Above question will be explained by indicating one example of case.
A person involved in road traffic accident or severe stroke due to bleeding in brain went unconscious status and underwent emergency surgical procedure to save his life by neurosurgery. After surgical procedure over and became general condition stable, he /she referred to Neurorehabilitation team under the department of physical medicine and rehabilitation (PMR). Neurorehabilitation team clinical lead is PMR doctor who would evaluate and assess his functional and medical stability and take under care of him and decide to refer to neuro rehab team members of Physiotherapy, Occupational therapy and Speech therapy for evaluation and plan of care.
