After examining his condition, doctors had suggested his family that he cannot survive for more than 3 to 4 days. He was on and off the ventilator and was not showing any signs of improvement. Sharat, a resident of Varanasi, was on the verge of losing his life when his family with help of his friends, turned to Aster RV Hospital for a last glimmer of hope.
In a heartwarming tale of resilience and medical expertise, Aster RV Hospital Bengaluru emerged as a beacon of hope for a young man of 42 years battling liver failure and severe infection. After getting incomplete information from the local doctors who treated him at Varanasi and understanding the criticality of Sharat’s condition, doctors suggested Sharat’s family to Airlift him. Sharat was on ventilator and was on medication to increase the BP which is called ino drops, due to which he could not travel on regular flight. Hence airlifting him was the best choice and he was airlifted the same night. He was attended upon as soon as he was admitted at Aster RV, Bengaluru.
Journey towards recovery
Sharat's journey to recovery began when his brother, desperate to save his sibling's life, sought out the expertise of Aster RV Hospital's renowned medical team. Dr. Naveen Ganjoo, Senior Consultant - Hepatology & Integrated Liver Care, Aster RV Hospital recalls the dire circumstances upon Sharat's arrival. "When Sharat was admitted to our hospital, he was in critical condition, diagnosed with liver failure and a severe infection. Local doctors at Varanasi had given up hope, providing him with a mere four-day deadline. However, we knew we had to give him a fighting chance. We started regular procedures to understand the issues in his liver, started antibiotics and did a bronchoscopy in the lungs which gave a pnemonia kind of a picture. In liver patients, the most dangerous thing is they get very bad infections which are difficult to treat. Because of his weak liver he had bad infections and the bronchoscopy revealed that his lungs had pus. His lungs was full of pus, it was very difficult to take out the pus and upon sending it for testing, it came out to be bad bacteria. The procedure was done for three to four days continuously. The procedure is called Twilighting of the lungs (cleaning of the lungs). In five days, we could take him off the ventilator. Then sensitive antibiotics were given and liver was treated without even requiring a transplant’ said Dr. Naveen
Despite the challenges posed by Sharat's weakened immune system and the urgency of his deteriorating health, Aster RV Hospital embarked on a mission to save his life. Sharat's case was particularly challenging due to the complications arising from his liver condition," explains Dr. Rommel S, consultant HPB & Transplant surgeon. Within five days, we were able to wean him off the ventilator and with sensitive antibiotics and specialized liver treatment, his health steadily improved and he was discharged.”
In this case, Lifestyle of Sharat, intake of alcohol, taking a lot of alternate medications over the counter, less immunity, all these lead to Liver complications. Medications were being taken for aches, pains, small issues also. These things actually made the Liver condition even worse. However, correct and timely Diagnosing and treatment was the key. Precision medicine was also administered which helped in the overall success of the case without Liver transplant.
