Cancer Types, Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatment Options

by Dr. C N Patil

Dr. C N Patil, HOD and Lead Consultant - Medical Oncology and Haemato-Oncology at Aster Whitefield Hospital, discusses the different types of cancer, including childhood cancers and adult cancers. He also talks about the importance of early detection and treatment.

Childhood Cancers

Childhood cancers are often caused by genetic factors rather than environmental factors. Common childhood cancers include:

  • Blood cancers: such as leukemia (particularly acute lymphoblastic leukemia)
  • Solid tumors: such as brain tumors, kidney tumors (Wilms tumor), neuroblastoma, and rhabdomyosarcoma

Approximately 90% of childhood cancers can be cured with proper treatment.

Adult Cancers

Adult cancers are often caused by lifestyle factors such as smoking and environmental exposures. Cancers can be classified as:

  • Hematologic cancers: such as leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, and myelodysplastic syndromes
  • Solid tumors: which can occur in various organs like the head and neck, lungs, stomach, pancreas, and bladder

While many hematologic cancers like leukemia and lymphoma can be cured, solid tumors are more challenging to treat, especially in advanced stages. Early detection and treatment significantly improve the chances of successful treatment for solid tumors.

Overall, Dr. C N Patil emphasizes the importance of early detection and treatment for all types of cancer. For any concerns or symptoms related to cancer, seek medical advice at Aster Whitefield Hospital.
