Is Dengue Fever Dangerous?

by Dr. Pooja Murthy

In this video blog, Dr. Pooja Murthy, Consultant - Critical Care Medicine at Aster Whitefield Hospital, talks about Dengue Fever. Dengue fever is a viral illness that can be very alarming and sometimes requires ICU care.

Symptoms and diagnosis

Shock, very low blood pressure, is one of the reasons a patient might need ICU care. Dengue fever can cause leaky capillaries, which means a lot of fluid will seep out of the circulatory system, affecting blood pressure and organs. PCV, the thickness of blood, goes up in most patients with severe dengue fever and is an important marker of a severe infection.

Treatment options

There is no specific medicine for Dengue fever, and the most important care is supportive care with a lot of fluids. Adequate fluids and monitoring can be done in an ICU setting to pick up on any organ failures. Patients with these features will need good ICU care.
