This informative video blog by Dr. Priyanka Kuri, Consultant in Dermatology, Aster Whitefield Hospital, explores Psoriasis, a chronic inflammatory disease affecting skin, nails, and joints. Psoriasis affects 0.2% to 4% of the global population. Psoriasis usually affects middle aged people from around 20 years to 40 years
Types of Psoriasis
Dr. Priyanka discusses about multiple types of psoriasis including classical psoriasis, scalp psoriasis, palmoplantar psoriasis, inverse psoriasis, pustular psoriasis and erythrodermic psoriasis. Classical psoriasis is the most common type, and it affects the extensors, elbows, knees, knuckles and lower back. Other types of psoriasis can affect only scalp, palms and soles, or inverse areas like genitals, armpits and groin. Pustular psoriasis and erythrodermic psoriasis are the most severe forms, and patients might need to be hospitalized for treatment
Treatment for Psoriasis
It should be noted that Psoriasis is not contagious and effective treatments exist. Treatment options include topical medications, oral medications and biologics. However, steroid abuse in treatment can cause side effects.
