Understanding Plastic Surgery: Reconstructive vs. Aesthetic Procedures

by Dr. Ashok B C

Dr. Ashok B C, HOD and Lead Consultant - Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery and Chief of Medical Services at Aster Whitefield Hospital, talks about the two main branches of plastic surgery: reconstructive surgery and aesthetic surgery.

Reconstructive Surgery

Reconstructive surgery aims to restore function and appearance to parts of the body that have been affected by disease, injury, or cancer. This can include anything from repairing a cleft lip to rebuilding a breast after a mastectomy.

Aesthetic Surgery

Aesthetic surgery, also known as cosmetic surgery, focuses on improving the appearance of features that people may not be happy with. This could include procedures like rhinoplasty (nose job) or breast augmentation. Dr. Ashok mentions that cosmetic surgery is an elective procedure, meaning it is not medically necessary.
