Dr. Kavitha Kovi, HOD - Obstetrics and Gynecology at Aster Women & Children Hospital, discusses Fetal Growth Restriction (FGR), also known as Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR). FGR is a condition where a baby is not growing at the expected rate in the womb.
Causes of FGR
FGR can occur early or late in pregnancy and can be caused by various factors, including infections, placental insufficiency, and chromosomal abnormalities. The most common cause is placental insufficiency, where the placenta is not able to provide enough oxygen and nutrients to the baby.
Diagnosis and Treatment
To diagnose FGR, doctors use ultrasounds to measure the baby's size and check blood flow to the placenta. They may also perform other tests, such as Doppler ultrasound and blood tests. The treatment for FGR depends on the severity of the condition and the gestational age of the baby. In some cases, close monitoring may be sufficient. In other cases, delivery may be necessary.
Dr. Kavitha emphasizes the importance of regular prenatal care and ultrasounds to detect FGR early on. Early detection and treatment can improve the outcome for both the mother and baby.
