Noisy Breathing in Infancy

by Dr. Srinivasa Murthy C L

This video discusses the common issue of noisy breathing in infants, often mistaken for chest congestion. Dr. Srinivasa Murthy C L, Lead Paediatrics, Consultant – Paediatrics and Neonatology, Aster Women & Children Hospital, explains that this is usually due to the narrow nasal airways of infants.

Causes of Noisy Breathing

  • Narrow nasal airways: Infants have smaller nasal passages compared to adults, making them more susceptible to airway turbulence.
  • Nasal congestion: Obstructions in the nasal passages can contribute to noisy breathing.

Symptoms and Treatment for Noisy Breathing

The common symptoms include snoring-like sounds during sleep or feeding, difficulty feeding or sleeping due to noisy breathing. The treatment options include using saline drops to help clear and moisten the nasal airways, reducing noisy breathing.

Dr. Srinivasa Murthy reassures parents that noisy breathing in infants is generally harmless and often resolves on its own within 6 to 12 months. Saline drops can be used to alleviate discomfort if needed.
