Kannur, Kerala – A team of expert surgeons at Aster MIMS Hospital, Kannur, has successfully removed a massive 12 kg tumor from the abdomen of a 32-year-old woman which was arising from her left ovary. The highly complex surgery was conducted at the hospital’s Oncosurgery Department, which is recognized as the No.1 Onco Surgery Centre in North Kerala.

The patient, who had been living abroad, noticed unusual weight gain despite having a lean physique. She also experienced persistent abdominal discomfort and sought medical treatment overseas, but her symptoms persisted. Seeking better care, she consulted the specialists at Aster MIMS Hospital, Kannur.

Following a thorough examination and advanced scanning, doctors identified a massive tumor occupying the whole of the abdomen and pushing into the chest, posing a potential risk of breathing difficulties. Additionally, the tumor had exerted pressure on a portion of the intestine, causing it to adhere to the growth, further complicating the condition.

The surgery presented three significant challenges:

Separation of the Intestine from the Tumor – The tumor had adhered to the intestine, making it difficult to detach without causing damage.

Tumor Removal Without Rupture – There was a high risk of the tumor bursting during extraction, which needed to be avoided to prevent complications.

Fertility Preservation – As the patient was nulliparous, preserving her reproductive health was a priority. Complete removal of the ovaries and uterus would have resulted in the loss of future pregnancy potential. Therefore, the team opted for a fertility-preserving staging laparotomy to carefully extract the tumor without affecting the uterus and ovaries.

Despite these challenges, the team successfully removed the tumor, which measured 50 cm in length and 30 cm in width. Dr. K.P. Abdulla, Senior Onco Surgeon, who led the operation, emphasized the rarity of such large tumors and the complexity of their removal. The surgical team included Dr. Bhavya (Gynecology) and Dr. Prasanth (Anesthesiology), who played crucial roles in ensuring the success of the procedure.

This groundbreaking surgery underscores the expertise and advanced capabilities of Aster MIMS Hospital, Kannur, in handling high-risk oncological cases.
